Dive into the Query Optimizer: Undocumented Insight
This 400 level session will focus on using undocumented statements and trace flags to get insight into how the query optimizer works. You'll learn which operations the optimizer performs during query optimization and see through these undocumented features what the query optimizer does from the moment a query is submitted to SQL Server until an execution plan is generated. We'll cover operations such as parsing, binding, simplification, trivial plan, and full optimization. We'll also explore transformation rules, the memo structure, how the query optimizer generates possible alternative execution plans, and how the best alternative is chosen based on those costs.

Fast-track to BI Analytics with SQL Server 2012

SQL Server 2012 has lowered the barrier to Business Intelligence competency and in this session Carlos Bossy will focus on the features you can (and should) implement immediately. The new Analytic functions in T-SQL, Columnstore indexes, and the Tabular model are powerful additions to the tool set that will give your users the ability to analyze data in a faster, more effective manner. Each of these features is targeted at casual or beginning BI developers and DBAs who more familiar with traditional relational database models. You will leave this session with a good understanding of the next steps to take to get on the fast-track to BI and how to make the most of powerful reporting tools such as PowerView and Excel.
Presenter bio - Carlos Bossy is a MCTS SQL Server 2008 BI Consultant and Certified Business Intelligence Professional (CBIP) with 25 years of experience in software and database development. Carlos is an independent consultant and focuses on developing Business Intelligence solutions including data warehouses, predictive analytics, data integration and reporting. He has been working with SQL Server for 10 years and is very enthusiastic about its powerful features. Carlos has developed warehouses and BI solutions for a variety of industries and state agencies.

Part 1: Introduction to Data Quality Services

Abstract - In this demo-filled talk, Lynn will explain and show how to use the new data cleansing and de-duplication services, called Data Quality Services in SQL Server 2012. You will learn what a Knowledge Base is, how to create KB and how to use to cleanse data. You will also learn how to write and to use matching rules to use DQS to detect potential duplicate values in your data.

Part 2: Understanding the New BI Semantic Model in SSAS (SQL Server 2012)

Abstract - A deep dive into using the new BI Semantic Model in Analysis Services using examples from mulitple industries - i.e. education, health care, open source gov't, etc… Here Lynn will compare and contrast using the UDM to create OLAP cubes vs. using the new lightweight BISM. She will explain BISM modeling concepts and show demos of creating BISM models using SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT).

Presenter bio - Lynn Langit is linguist who has been working with data for 15 years. She’s published 3 books on SQL Server Business Intelligence and has most recently worked with the SQL Azure team at Microsoft. In Oct 2011, Lynn left Microsoft to work as a voice in the Big Data frontier. She plans to analyze and write about the state of data in the cloud in her new blog www.lynnlangit.com, to teach and to build big data solutions.

Please Note: Lynn Langit is also teaching an all-day class in Anaheim on May 22, 2012. Please follow this link for details: http://nosqlforsqlpros.eventbrite.com/

James Johnson
Entity Framework and MVC Scaffolding
Abstract:
In this session we will go over how Microsoft's Entity Framework makes it easy to work with your databases and build out your applications; either through Database First or Code First. We will also show how MVC Scaffolding quickly builds out the CRUD methods and operations in your ASP.NET MVC applications, allowing you more time to concentrate on business logic and other fun tasks, getting your projects done faster and on time.
Speaker Bio:
James is a three time and current Microsoft MVP in Client App Development, a past Director on the INETA North America Board, a husband and dad, and has been developing software since the early days of Laser Discs and HyperCard stacks. As the Founder and President of the Inland Empire .NET User's Group, he has fondly watched it grow from a twice-a-month, early Saturday morning group of five in 2003, to a robust and rambunctious gathering of all types and sizes of .NET developers.

James loves to dig deep into the latest cutting edge technologies - sometimes with spectacular disasters - and spread the word about the latest and greatest bits, getting people excited about developing web sites and applications on the .NET platform, and using the best tools for the job. He tries to blog as often as he can, but usually gets distracted by EF, LINQ, MVC, ASP, SQL, XML, and most other types of acronyms. To keep calm James plays a mean Djembe and tries to practice his violin. You can follow him on twitter at @latringo.
